MTD: first live submission completed via TaxCalc as customer hails ease of use.
TaxCalc has achieved another MTD milestone, as our first live quarterly submission of an update period successfully reached HMRC.
And the verdict is in: “In true TaxCalc style it was intuitive - needing no
help or guidance to use.”
Those were the words of Robyn Milstead, Director of Tax at LKA Chartered Accountants, who was among our Beta testers. Robyn,
a TaxCalc customer, made the submission using TaxCalc’s new MTD Quarterly Filer product.
And shortly afterwards she took to LinkedIn to tell fellow accountants the news.
“Much excitement for me today as I became the first person to make a (live) test submission using TaxCalc MTD Quarterly Filer!” she wrote.
TaxCalc’s treble of MTD landmarks
It was a treble landmark week for TaxCalc as:
- HMRC moved us to the ‘Available Now’ section of the software choices page for MTD for ITSA on its official website.
- Our first UK Property Business submission also went through
These achievements represent a huge triumph for our Product, Tech and Development teams, having embarked on a long, winding road tracing back to February 2019. That was when work first begun on the early phases of Business Filer – the prototype for the new product.
Since those early days, there has been a panoply of twists and turns in the tale of MTD, with major changes in the rules for MTD for Income Tax during that period; not to mention delays, doubts and even speculation that the scheme would be axed before it came to life.
TaxCalc – making MTD easier
Robyn, who runs an MTD information sharing group on WhatsApp for fellow accountancy professionals, openly admits to being against MTD for ITSA in its current form. But despite that, she found filing through TaxCalc a satisfying experience.
The submission, which included income and expenses, was for a sole trader business which Robyn had signed up to HMRC’s MTD pilot.
“While it’s NOT just a “click of a button” - and while I have made a small suggestion to ease use - it’s certainly confirmed I won’t be needing to look at any other bridging software,” Robyn told followers on LinkedIn.
Helping businesses facing huge task
Speaking later, Robyn added: “With MTD for IT set to launch in April 2026 many small businesses feel we are being faced with an enormous challenge, but TaxCalc are making it that little bit easier.
“TaxCalc MTD Quarterly Filer, like all TaxCalc offerings in my experience, is intuitive and clear - making MTD submissions as user friendly as possible. I like that it is capable of automating part of the process.”
She added: “Well done TaxCalc team and thank you also to those from the team contributing to MTD therapy.”
A milestone long in the making
Trish Ralston, Tax Product Owner at TaxCalc, said: “It’s been such a long time coming. Not only did we have the changes in the MTD journey and the requirements, there’s been lots of speculation about MTD not happening at all, so to get to that point where we have a working product and seeing it tested successfully, it feels great. The TaxCalc team is really pleased to reach that goal – and to say we’re almost there.”
She added: “It was great to hear the excitement and enthusiasm in the customer’s voice and to hear her say it was very easy to use and that she didn’t need any help to do it. In fact, she actively ignored the help videos available to test how intuitive it was.”
Helping TaxCalc customers
MTD Quarterly Filer will remain free for customers up until the rules kick in in April 2026.
“We want to help customers prepare, get ready and have the opportunity to try it out during this pilot period without the burden of the cost,” Trish explained.
We plan to release the product in early July for customers.
