How Elevate streamlined their systems to produce a tax return in just 10 minutes

Liam Wilson started his Wrexham based practice with a vision of making things easy for his team. TaxCalc was the obvious choice.

Liam's choice after using several legacy solutions

A Personal Reason to Get It Right

Liam’s route into accountancy started with a hard lesson learned early. As a teenager, he watched his father’s business collapse under bad advice from accountants, forcing him into 18-hour days just to keep the family afloat. That experience shaped Liam’s entire approach to the profession and, three years ago, it led him to launch Elevate.

“I just saw there was a missing gap for the old style of accountancy that personal relationship,” he explains. Private equity consolidation had swept up a number of local firms, and Liam saw an opening to build something different: a practice built on trust rather than volume.

"About 30 minutes to an hour tagging the actual accounts to the corporation tax return, just to allow them to flow in. Easy!"

Liam Wilson - Owner and Director - Elevate Accountancy

Leaving the “Big Boys” Behind

Between his first taste of TaxCalc and founding Elevate, Liam worked at firms running a range of legacy, server based solutions for tax and accounts.

"It’s so long and a nightmare to use, always flipping between them."

His verdict on that history is unambiguous. Where TaxCalc flowed, he found the larger platforms slow, disjointed and unnecessarily complex, with corporation tax filing alone eating up time the team could ill afford.

So when Elevate launched, there was no evaluation process to speak of. “As soon as we launched Elevate, I just went back to TaxCalc,” Liam says.

Implementation and onboarding

"I can do tax returns in 10 minutes. It's just so easy."

Ten-Minute Tax Returns

SimpleStep, TaxCalc’s guided alternative to the traditional HMRC return format, is central to that speed. It carries forward what was filed the previous year, walks preparers through each section, and flags anything missing before submission.

Combined with TaxCalc’s auto-tagging on corporation tax returns, and default trial balance import maps for each client via Xero, the effect compounds across every job Elevate’s team touches, turning what used to be an hour of admin into minutes.

A Team That Never Needed Convincing

"They just says it’s a dream compared to what they're used to."

None of Elevate’s eight-strong Wrexham team had used TaxCalc before joining the firm. Liam, who once spent a full week training new starters on legacy systems now gets a team member fully productive in a couple of hours.

That includes a new hire who joined the firm a few months ago and whose reaction, in Liam’s words, needed no further explanation.

What’s Next: Closing the Loop with Engager

"I think Engager just saves so much time inputting into our CRM and that flowing back through to TaxCalc."

Elevate currently connects its CRM to TaxCalc via Zapier, a workaround Liam describes as clunky. With Engager, TaxCalc’s practice management platform, now on his radar for this year, he’s expecting a two-way flow of client data that removes a real bottleneck for his admin team.

The Bottom Line

"If we can get compliance software that speeds the compliance side up, why wouldn’t you use it?"

Liam’s advice to any firm still weighing up a switch is simple: talk to someone who already uses it. “Have a demo of it, ask any accountant that uses it what they think,” he says. “I just find it so easy.”
