The need for new solutions

After two years of using Sage, Fortuna Accountants felt it was holding them back.

Kate Wright, Director and Owner, explains:

"As a fully remote working practice, one of our key challenges with previous software was the lack of flexibility for remote access and collaboration.”

Kate, who had also used Sage for several years in a previous practice, was clear what had to change.

“We needed a cloud-based solution that allowed our team to work efficiently from different locations, access client data in real-time, and integrate seamlessly with the tools we use to manage our day-to-day accounting services.

Scalability, security, and user-friendliness were also critical considerations that many older systems didn’t meet.”

"Go ahead - it's great software!"

Why TaxCalc stood out from the crowd

With so much choice in the accountancy software space, what made Kate opt for TaxCalc?

“We chose TaxCalc due to its strong functionality, competitive pricing, and its recommendation from Xero - our preferred cloud accounting platform,”

Kate explains.

“It integrates well with our existing systems, is user-friendly, and supports our goal of maintaining an efficient, cloud-based, remote practice.”

Currently, the firm uses Tax Return Production (particularly the Corporation Tax module), Accounts Production, and Cloud Connect.

A simple switchover

Accountants often feel anxious about switching their software – especially if they have had their existing solution in place a long while. Even if they are not satisfied with the solution they have in place, there is often a reluctance to switch.

Moving to a new provider can be daunting, with fears over downtime. But Kate assures other accountants considering making a move that the reality was quite different for her and her team.

She says:

“The transition process went better than expected. It was straightforward to import prior year data and client information, which made the setup smooth and efficient. The support and guidance available also helped ensure minimal disruption to our workflow.”

Reaping the benefits of change

So, what difference has she noticed in terms of workflow and the speed the team can get work done?

Kate says:

“TaxCalc has significantly improved our workflow and overall efficiency. The team is now able to work more productively and complete tasks faster, thanks to the intuitive interface and streamlined processes. This has also allowed us to enhance client service by responding more quickly and accurately.”

Saving time and making life easier

Cutting down time spent on certain key tasks has been one of the most significant impacts of switching.

Kate says:

“We’ve seen noticeable time savings since switching to TaxCalc. The functionality is much easier to use - particularly when editing notes in the financial statements - which has helped streamline our review process. This efficiency boost has also contributed to improved team morale and reduced pressure during busy periods.”

Favourite features

And what specific features have had the biggest impact?

Kate sees the single, integrated database which enables information to flow easily from one TaxCalc product to another – as one of the most helpful features.

“The way Corporation Tax in Tax Return Production integrates with Accounts Production has had a significant impact.

“The seamless link between the two allows for automatic tax computation and enables us to post the tax journal directly from Corporation Tax to Accounts Production. This has saved time, reduced manual input, and improved accuracy across our workflow.”

She said the team’s favourite feature is the fact Corporation Tax Journal directly links up with Accounts Production.

Aside from the software itself, Kate agreed with many customers who highlight the value of TaxCalc’s Customer Support team – all accounting-trained experts who are UK-based and available to call.

“The customer support – they’re on the end of the telephone when needed”

Advice for accountants

So, for any accountants thinking of joining TaxCalc, what does Kate say?

“Go ahead - it’s great software! The transition was smoother than expected, and it integrates well with Xero, especially when importing data. It’s user-friendly, reliable, and has definitely improved how we manage our accounts production and tax work.”
