What is the difference between Government gateway and Gov.UK verify?

HMRC have introduced a new method of taxpayer access on Gov.UK called Verify. It is a partial replacement for the Government Gateway and is designed for individuals only.

The new account uses personal information to identify you when you create the account and then either additional security questions or your mobile phone to log in to Government online services. The personal information is stored by third parties, such as the Post Office or Experian, but not with the Government itself. It is generally considered to be more secure than the Government Gateway.

However, to start or continue to use third party software such as TaxCalc, you will need a Government Gateway account. Since the launch of Gov.Uk Verify, it has become slightly trickier to find this on the Gov UK website.

How do I get a Government Gateway account?
You can enrol for a Government Gateway account here:

If you require any assistance with enrolment, you can contact HMRC Online services on 0300 200 3600 (+44 161 930 8445 international).
