TaxCalc 2009 Release Notes

The current version is 9.30.04 - released 29th November 2011

The following issue has been addressed:

SA submissions

  • The TaxCalc Security Certificate has been updated following recent HMRC changes.

Version 9.26.04

  • Fixed an issue with Box 42 on the CT600 return where returns could not be submitted for type '2' or type '3' companies that also have associated companies. They can now be filed.
  • Improved the validation on Box 42 so that it always produces a warning message when it is not ticked and the main rate of CT is not being claimed. All warnings relevant to Box 42 should now always be appearing when applicable.

Version 9.26.02 - released 27th November 2009

  • Fixed issue with CT600 Capital Allowance calculator if the WD Value brought forward value in the Grid has been manually edited, rather than automatically calculated by adding an asset. It was possible that the manual entry in this box may be lost and need to be re-entered when opening in the latest version. This affected only returns where the Calculator is used and this figure was manually edited.

Version 9.26.01 – released on 24th November 2009

Important Updates to the CT600 (Corporation Tax) returns

Version 9.26.01 is being released to accommodate the changes which are being implemented by HMRC to the way in which their internal systems validate the information which is transferred through the Government Gateway. Due to this change you should be aware of the following alterations to the CT600 series of forms:

  • The CT603 dates have been removed. This should allow more flexibility when filing CT600 returns and amended dates. It should also allow for e-filing of dormant companies where there have been issues in the past. Note: This will mean the IRmark on any existing returns will change and this is unavoidable.
  • For e-filing purposes, the declaration of whether Accounts and or Computations are attached has been changed by HMRC. You must declare separately whether each has been attached and, if not, there is a defined list of ‘reasons’ to be given. For paper filing, the program will automatically provide an explanatory page when the declaration of accounts and computations differs. You will notice a new screen on the CT600 allowing you to declare what is being attached and provide reasons for not attaching, if necessary. This will change the IRmark on any existing returns and you may be prompted to check these declarations before e-filing.
  • Companies with no Profits Chargeable to CT – box 37. If the amount in this box is zero (eg: dormant or loss-making companies), there is a new HMRC rule that insists the rate of CT must be 28%, not 21%. Obviously this does not impact any calculations but we do enforce this so that the return can be filed online. This will mean the IRmark on any existing returns with no chargeable profits will change and this is unavoidable.
  • Associated companies. Although you have the option to enter the number of associated companies in box 39 OR enter the number in the first and second year separately in boxes 40 and 41, HMRC rules are that if the accounting period is AFTER 31st March 2006, you MUST enter the maximum number that were associated at any one time during the accounting period covered by the return. This must be entered in Box 39. On any existing returns that contravene this rule, you will be prompted to re-enter the data into box 39 which will then remove the entries in boxes 40 and 41.
  • CT600A (Loans to participators). There is additional, automatic validation on the completion dates in this supplementary section. If you have any entries on page 3 of the CT600A, you are advised to re-enter the date in box 'a' on this page to ensure that they are correct. This only applies to existing returns.
  • CT600C (Group and Consortium). There are new HMRC rules surrounding Notices of Consent for the CT600C. TaxCalc has new tickboxes to cater for these rules and when you are declaring. If you have existing returns with CT600C supplementary pages, you are advised to check your entries on these pages before e-filing, particularly with reference to the Authorisation/Declaration sections at the bottom of each page. If applicable to any existing returns, this may change the IRMark.
  • There is a new screen for handling CT600 PDF attachments which now appears in the left hand menu on all CT600 returns.
  • There is a new 'Test' file system for CT600 on the online filing screen. Whilst this is not a complete reflection of a 'Live' file, it does test against most HMRC rules and validations and provides an indication as to whether the file WILL pass current HMRC e-filing rules.
  • Logic has been added to force the Main rate of CT to be used when a company has no taxable profits (eg: dormant or loss-making). Although this will not actually affect the calculations within the return, you should be aware that we have implemented this in order to work around a 'bug' in the HMRC validation rules and allow e-filing.
  • Logic has been added to Associated Companies. For any returns with an accounting period starting after 1st April 2006, you will not be allowed to enter different numbers of associated companies for two different financial years. This is in accordance with HMRC rules and has caused confusion and e-filing errors in the past.
  • HMRC are enforcing the correct completion of Box 42 (declare that company is changed at starting rate / is claiming MRR). Validation has been added to ensure that it is ticked in the correct circumstance.
  • New HMRC PDF for CT600I (Ring Fenced Profits) has been added along with addition of a new box on this page (if you have a company with Ring Fences profits it is advised that you check your entries).

In addition to the legislative Filing Changes in V9.26.01 we have taken the opportunity to include the following features:

  • The Client Questionnaire has been enhanced in response to user feedback. Existing, Excel-based system will continue to work for TaxCalc 2009 only.
  • A new, single page, Short Self Employment Summary has been added (rather than using the longer Full Summary).
  • V9.26.01 includes extra Summaries for SA800 (Partnerships) return with Multiple Trades.
  • Additional validation has been added to the SA900 (Trust) return Capital Gains pages to ensure that all e-filing required fields have been completed.
  • Forced validation on Life Gains boxes on R40 ensuring entry through the provided wizard therefore ensuring calculations are correct in all cases.

The following additional issues have been addressed:

  • The Company Name and Accounting Period of the company on the CT600 Computations was not always being included in the export to Word/Excel, this has now been resolved.
  • There was an issue with tax paid on Life Gains not being included in calculation on SA900 (Trust) return, this now correctly appears.
  • Some text changes have been made to the online filing screen to make things clearer to the user.
  • In the SA100 Property pages (SA104), the ‘Repairs’ wizard was not always deleting data that had been entered; this now behaves correctly.
  • On the SA100 Property pages (SA104), it was possible for certain figures to be changed and removed resulting in Box 36 (Adjusted property for the year) being incorrectly cleared. This prevented online filing until the figure was re-entered.
  • Added additional validation to the HS304 Residence and Remittance worksheet to prevent a negative calculation.
  • Logic on Foreign Land and Property pages could result in a claim for the Remittance basis incorrectly being used, this has now been resolved.
  • It was possible, on the Individual return (SA100) to enter the Tax Adviser’s post code without entering the address line above. Now this is validated as it prevented e-filing.
  • Wording and logic added to the Capital Allowances Calculator to improve ease of use and allow for correct import next year.
  • Automatic figures entered from the new Dividend Database are now being rounded as expected.
  • Fixed an issue on the SA800 Partnership Statement where a 10% notional tax credit was not being applied to foreign dividends. This has now been resolved.
  • Where the user had ticked the Deferment tick box, the SA302 summary was displaying an incorrect Class 4 figure, even though it was using the correct figure in the calculations. This display issue has been addressed.

Version 9.22.00 - released on 6th October 2009

The following issues have been addressed:

  • Where a user started to use the capital allowances calculator (in a CT600) and decided to switch to the manual computations, the data entered within the calculator was not being removed automatically. This has now been corrected.
  • When using the capital allowances calculator in a CT600 the amount of profit for each financial year was not being updated automatically. This has been resolved.
  • When printing a tax return which has not yet been filed online, the IR mark for the file could change if the return had not been saved after printing. This has been fixed.
  • In the Capital Allowance Calculator, if the total value of assets was greater than £1000 then the 'Small Pool Write Off' was not enabled. Now the General (20%) pool and also the Special (10%) pool will allow separate 'Small Pool Write Off' entries if either or both of them are less than £1000.
  • The calculations for Annual Investment Allowance limit and the Writing Down Allowance were not accounting for 29th February if this was within the accounting period. This has been fixed.
  • CT600 - If you are completing an old return for a Company with an accounting period that straddles 31st December 2005 AND there are Ring Fenced profits, the calculation of these profits may be incorrect (by a few pence) which may prevent e-filing.

Please note that the following new features are now available in version 9.20.00:

The new Capital Allowance function will mean that manual calculations no longer have to be carried out and a rolling asset recording system exists for users.
  • Dividend database allowing users to select a company from which the dividend is paid and have the final and interim dividend automatically posted to the software. The date of the dividend along with the amount will be brought into the software without the requirement for manual input.
